Erin McMahon, a physical therapist assistant, and her 10-year-old pug, Woof, have accomplished a remarkable feat by climbing the New Hampshire 48 – a series of mountains that stand at 4,000 ft. or higher. McMahon has expressed how Woof follows her like a baby duck on the trail, and how it brings joy to her when she looks back and sees him with a big dog smile. They have even scaled some 6,000-ft. mountains on their weekends together and hiked up to 22 miles in a day. It’s a small step for man, but a giant leap for pug-kind!
McMahon expresses that her dog loves spending time with her, especially during hikes when he gets a delicious lunch at the top. The lunch usually consists of kibble mixed with pumpkin, cheese or blueberries as an added incentive for his effort. McMahon’s favorite aspect of hiking with her dogs is observing the reactions of people who are surprised and amazed to see a pug on a mountain trail. Many people ask if he can complete the hike, but McMahon assures them that he can. The dogs are sometimes given a lift, particularly when Woof’s paws get wet, but they are excellent climbers and are like little goats scampering up the trail.
